Introducing Autocross Rank: A New Way to Track Your Progress

Introducing Autocross Rank, a new system to track your autocross performance and progress over time, against over 90,000 drivers.

Introducing Autocross Rank, a new system to track your autocross performance and progress over time, against over 90,000 drivers.

I’ve spent 25+ years in the sport of autocross. In that time, I’ve spent countless hours contemplating an idea: how can we rank drivers from around the country (or even the world) and allow them to compare themselves to the best of the best? For many years I simply couldn’t get my head around the scope of the project, but with the advent of AI software development tooling I finally got around to working on the idea, AutocrossRank.com.

I knew the struggle was going to be getting “data” into a useble format, there are hundreds of organizations that put on events every year around the country, and few of them use exactly the same timing software and results formats for each and every event.

About 18 months ago I made the first attempt, throwing some AI development prompts at GitHub Copilot (in VS Code) to see what it could come up with. After a few hours of attempts I had nothing. I simply didn’t get it moving in the right direction to move forward. Late last fall I made another attempt, this time using GitHub Copilot issues/tasks in a GitHub repository to break the process down into smaller chunks that would work to start processing results. This time around I made some progress but the holidays got in the way and I didn’t get real traction on my side.

In early March, however, I really jumped in, I threw a bunch of prompts and ideas at every AI coding tool I could leverage (GitHub Copilot, ChatGPT/Codex and Claude) and started making progress. I was able to get a working portal up and running in just a few hours and started by processing data from the SCCA Solo National Championships and National Tour results. By early April I had a couple of hundred events imported and I was comfortable enough with the site to open it up to the world, though with a small rollout really only promoting it via my personal social media (FB) to start.

A great group of users stepped up and started helping me out, providing very good feedback, suggestions, and even starting to upload results from various local events. Things took off from there and the site has grown rapidly since.

Today AutocrossRank includes:

  • 90,000+ drivers
  • 7,000+ events
  • Results from national, regional, and local autocross organizations across the country

Here’s a brief introduction to what I’m trying to accomplish with the site.

What Is AutocrossRank?

AutocrossRank is a growing database of autocross results from across the country. The goal is to make results easier to search, preserve historical data, and provide rankings that help drivers compare performance over time, for themselves and against other drivers.

The site combines event results, driver statistics, and ranking data into a single searchable platform.

Driver Rankings

One of the first major features is the AutocrossRank Score (ARS).

Rather than simply counting wins, the ranking system looks at head-to-head competition and who you’ve competed against. Beating strong drivers helps your ranking more than beating inexperienced competitors, while consistency over time helps establish confidence in a driver’s score.

The result is a ranking system designed specifically for autocross. Be sure to check out our FAQ for some clarifying questions and answers.

Is this ranking system perfect? Absolutely not, but it’s a start. There are going to be instances of “bad data” or results that shouldn’t be included in the rankings (Test & Tune events for example can be uploaded, but we’ve tried to mark them to NOT be included). If you come across something that doesn’t look right, just reach out (once you’re logged in there’s a “Report a Data Problem” link on just about every page, feel free to use it).

When are rankings updated? Currently they are manually updated, we’ve been running them a few times a week to start. Eventually they will update weekly.

This Is Just The Beginning

AutocrossRank is still growing. More results are being added regularly, rankings will continue to improve, and additional features are already planned.

If you don’t see your favorite events, region, or results yet, stay tuned—and feel free to reach out.

Take A Look

Search for your name, explore the rankings, and see where you stack up.

Get Involved

First things first, get registered on the website. Once you’re registered, you can start uploading results from your local events, and you can also help by providing feedback on the site, reporting data issues, and sharing the site with your autocross friends.

You can earn “Paddock Points” for uploading results, adding event locations, claiming your driver profile, and more! Paddock Points are a fun way to track your contributions to the site and earn some bragging rights in the process, and later this year they will possibly provide you some real value! I’m thinking about bringing some ARS Swag to the 2026 Solo Nationals, and Paddock Points could be a way to earn some of that swag.

Claim your driver results! If you have results in the system, be sure to claim your driver profile. This will allow you to edit your profile, add a photo, and more. It also helps me out by confirming that the results are actually yours (there are some duplicate names in the system, so this helps me make sure the right results are associated with the right driver). If you see multiple iterations of your name, just claim the one with the most results and then report the other one as a duplicate, we can merge the profiles together.

Pick The Winners!

The Pick The Winners contest is coming, we’re already building out the functionality and will have it ready to go shortly after Solo Nationals registration opens up in the next two weeks. The PTW contest this year will leverage ARS as well! Voting will get you Paddock Points, and winning will get you even more!

Acknowledgements

A big thanks to everyone who has contributed data, provided feedback, and helped spread the word about AutocrossRank. There are a few folks who have really stepped up and provided a ton of help, including: Darrin DiSimo, Kevin Wenzel, Andrew Salazar, and many others!
